If you’re looking to get the most out of your exterior stain, try using a solid stain instead of semi-transparent. It looks similar to a paint but it doesn’t go on as thick. Solid stains still show a little of the wood grain but do cover mostly like a paint. You’ll get more life out of solid stain. It also saves you money!

Safety is the number one priority of Peak Pro Painting during the COVID19 Pandemic. What we are promising to our staff, as well as to the homeowners that we are privileged to work with:

We will maintain social distancing in the office as well as when in public.
No handshaking or physical touching needs to take place.
We will not gather in groups larger than absolutely necessary and never more than 10 as per the current guidelines from Governor Polis. If these guidelines become stricter, we can adjust as necessary.
Our painters are maintaining social distancing at the job site.
Our painters, when picking up paint from stores, are using curbside pickup whenever possible. When not possible, they wear masks and practice social distancing.
In adherence to Governor Polis’s restrictions, we will wear masks in public. This includes our painters, as well as our Sales personnel when on property at a Homeowner’s residence.
We will wipe down all flat surfaces with a sanitizing cleanser in our office as well as in our vehicles once leaving any property.
All documents can be emailed with an electronic signature as an option.
During a Walk-Thru with a Homeowner and/or accepting payment, we will maintain social distancing throughout if the homeowner requires us to walk with them. Otherwise, arrangements can be made for pick-up of payment and pictures can be sent by email or text for any touchups needed. NO PHYSICAL CONTACT IS REQUIRED.

On most homes there will be three different colors for the body, trim, and accent. Depending on the layout of your home there may be an option to use two different colors for the body. As you can see above a tan and brown were used in tandem to color the body. This dual-body color effect can be used to greatest effect when there are multiple types exterior surfaces. The upper body with the darker brown color is a different siding type than the main body siding. This type of color scheme is rare but when possible it can be a striking look that works great!

This home’s color scheme is a perfect representation of what we like to call the “70/20/10” rule. The body color will be 70% of what people see on your home. For this reason, it is recommended to use more subdued colors. The trim will be 20% of what is seen, and the accent color will be 10%. Trim and accent colors can be bolder and richer and still remain pleasing to the eye. For this home, Sherwin Williams’ Tricorn Black was used as an accent. Its rich, sharp darkness is a perfect accent color, but if it were used as the body color, its boldness would not fit.

Barn Red on body color.

Sometimes our clients want to go BOLD, and when we say boldly we mean Barn Red on the body of their house. I’ll admit some houses look beautiful that color but before jumping the gun on Barn Red, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

– HOA boards aren’t always a huge fan of the color on your body. Mainly because they try to keep the neighborhood painted in calm earth tones.

– It takes 2x the paint most of the time to get the red to cover properly, which means you’ll be paying for 2 coats on the body instead of 1.

– Red will fade much, much faster than any other color. Even the high grade “lifetime” paints will not hold up for long against the sun.

Different types of finishes for different rooms in your home?

There are several finishes that paint manufacturers produce. There is a flat paint, semi-gloss, gloss, high gloss, eggshell, low luster, & satin. Each of these finishes has a specific function that works better in some places in your home than in others.

For instance, for exterior painting, we recommend using a semi-gloss. A satin finish is reflective of sunrays and helps the paint stay fresh longer, saving your money in the long run!

For Interior painting , the location of the paint varies. For the walls, we recommend an eggshell paint because it allows for washing and has more resistance to scuffing. On your ceiling, we recommend a flat paint because it will hide imperfections and uneven texture. And finally, on your baseboards and doors, we recommend a semi-gloss because it is a bit more damage resistant to high traffic areas.

How to pick colors that go with your stone

One challenge we’ve come across is picking colors when there is stone or brick in the picture. Here are a few tips to help pick the right color around stone or brick.

If the brick/stone has red (or warm colors) always try to stick with warm colors.
If the stone has blue, gray or other cool colors, try to stick with cool colors.
Don’t try to match the color of your stone, chances are the paint store wont be able to match it perfectly and if they did, you wouldn’t want it all to blend anyway, you want the stone to stand out.
One option is to white wash or even stain the brick if you absolutely hate the color of it.

Save Time & Money With Snowbound

We recommend using Snowbound for a few important reasons! The first of which is that it will save you money. Because Snowbound using raw umber as a base, you are getting a true white which has impeccable cover. Typically our painters can use 2coats to cover, rather than atypical 3 coats on the trim. This saves you money because we aren’t using as much paint (typically)and that means less labor in your home. The big exceptions to this typical 2 coat rule are if we are painting over a darker trim, such as a navy blue, black, or even a yellow, as yellow will shine through a white paint. The second reason we recommend Snowbound is that is a bright white color that goes with just about any other exterior color.

With Colorado’s extreme weather, fading WILL happen even if its 10 years down the road, and with Snowbound it fades gracefully. Instead of going to a classic white, which can yellow over time, Snowbound will fade to a softer white but it is still a white.

Stucco projects are highly specialized and therefore, have special needs. When painting stucco, it is important to pick the right paint finish for the job. In this blog Peak Pro will let you in on the biggest mistake you can make when painting stucco homes.

Why you should never use a satin or high gloss paint:

High gloss paints are great for high traffic areas that need to withstand cleaning products and normal wear and tear. Although it might sound tempting that you could cover your exterior stucco home in gloss paint and never worry about difficult cleaning again. Read this article to understand the proper methods of cleaning stucco (it can be pretty tricky). However, high gloss paint doesn’t have the same efficacy on stucco, and Peak Pro would NOT recommend using gloss paints on stucco exteriors. Painting stucco with high gloss paint is the biggest mistake you can make when painting stucco! High gloss paints highlights irregularities, this is the last thing that you would want when it comes to stucco. Stucco looks best with a matte paint or semi-gloss paint to mask imperfections.

Why Peak Pro uses a flat paint finish when painting stucco

Although options such as a satin finish may seem attractive, it is important to be aware of a phenomenon called shadowing. Shadowing occurs on stucco when a glossier finish is applied on a porous stucco surface and the reflection of light creates the illusion of dark inconsistencies on the paint surface. To avoid this, it is best to use a flat finish paint. A flat finish has significantly less sheen, therefore reducing the reflection of light on the paint and therefore the shadowing. This is just another example of knowing your project and knowing your product.

Chose the right type of paint

It is important to avoid all oil-based paints when painting stucco exteriors. Oil paints do not breathe like water-based coatings. Moisture within your home should be able to evaporate through the exterior walls and oil based paints will hinder this process, resulting in bubbling and peeling paint.

DIY Textured Walls

Textured walls have always been a hit in 20th century homes, especially the classic knock down method. Textured drywall topping makes a beautiful cloud like composition that looks great with metallic paints. Textured walls are a favorite of professional painters because of the the way it patches up any lines in the drywall or wallpaper making the appearance that the wall is seamlessly connected. In this Peak Pro Blog we will teach you how to create textured walls using the knock down method.

What you will need for DIY textured walls:

-Dry wall light weight joint compound
-Electric hopper (Spray rig, with a hose, compressor and a hopper to hold your compound). You can typically rent these out at your local hardware store.
-Drill with a whip on the end to stir the dry wall compound
-Large bucket
-Trowel

Before you start your DIY textured walls:

DIY textured walls is a messy job, so make sure your mask the entirety of your room and remove all furniture. How to make a drywall spray mud:

Mix drywall joint compound with water in your large bucket and stir with your drill until the consistency of the mud is still thick but falls off the whip on your drill.

Things you should know when spraying drywall spray mud:

Although you want your texture to look natural, consistency is key when applying the drywall spray mud. Before you start, consider what you want your textured walls to look like? Do you want a light subtle texture, or a statement texture? Using a wide tip and low pressure will cause a rougher texture, whereas a smaller tip and a higher pressure will create a smooth texture. When spraying the drywall joint compound you will want to hold your electric spray hopper about two feet from the wall at a 90 degree angle. Use a circular or side to side motion to apply the drywall spray mud. Make sure to never stop in one place for too long, or else the mud will lay on too thick.

You will want to wait until the texture is partly dry. A good signifier is that the sheen on the texture will begin to disappear. Then you can grab your trowel and gently knock down the texture. The goal is not to smooth it completely, but keep an even pressure and gently drag your tool along the wall. You will notice that if you smear the texture too early it will all blend together and not give you the desired texture. When doing the knock down method, direction is unspecific when knocking down the small mountains of the spray mud.

How to fix your textured drywall:

Textured drywall isn’t always an easy process, but there are ways to make your wall look its best. If the texture dries and looks too thick, just sand it down until it looks more consistent. If you mess up your consistency, and the drywall spray mud is still wet, you can take your trowel and scrape it off and put it back in your hopper and try again. WARNING! Do not do this with drying compound, you want an even consistency of drywall spray mud going into the hopper. Patchwork on a textured wall will never look perfect but make sure to take your time and follow the same steps that you did when you initially applied your textured wall.

How To Set Up a Ladder On Asphalt Roofs

When confronted with the task of reaching a third floor or raised roof that is out of reach, you’re probably wondering how to use a ladder on a asphalt roofs? Maybe the roof has a steep incline and you don’t know how to safely level it? And, how to avoid damaging the shingles? But first, Some Important Safety Tips:

Be sure that all locks on an extension ladder are properly engaged
Use a ladder only on a stable and level surface, unless it has been secured (top or bottom) to prevent displacement.
Avoid electrical hazards! – Look for overhead power lines before handling a ladder.
Use a harness when necessary.
Have a friend spot and support ladder.

When setting up a ladder on asphalt roofs, it’s important to set it up properly so that you don’t damage the roof. Always make sure to use ladder pads and/or ladder pivots. Protecting your roof only takes a few seconds, and can save you a lot of time repairing torn shingles.

Pivit Ladder Tool

If you need to use a ladder on a steep shingle roof, you need a Pivit Ladder tool. This tool will give you a sturdy and level base to place your ladder on slanted ground. The Pivit ladder leveling boxes are lined in rubber so that you a have traction to shingled roofs and provides some protection to the shingles. A ladder that has self leveling feet works best when working on asphalt roofs. Always take extra caution, have a spotter support the Pivit ladder tool and the ladder when on asphalt roofs.

Roof Boot

A roof boot is a metal tool that you drill into the roof that works as a stopper for the base of a ladder. All you do is lay the ridge hook of the ladder on the apex of the house, and determine where to apply your roof boot. Hammer in the roof boot with long nails and attach to the bottom rung of the ladder. This could also be used in conjunction with the pivit ladder tool providing extra protection from your ladder sliding or damaging asphalt roofs.

To ensure your asphalt shingles are protected:

Never put the metal sides of a ladder down on asphalt roofs without protecting the roof shingles.

DIY Exterior Trim Board Replacement

Are you thinking of painting the exterior of your home but are in need of repairs that can’t (and shouldn’t) be covered by a fresh coat of paint? A great place to start, is to check the exterior trim of your home! Maybe the wear and tear is visible to the common onlooker, or maybe the damage is hiding under paint. Always make sure to check your home for exterior trim damage. That way your new paint job isn’t at risk of bubbling, peeling, or molding from water creeping under the paint of your home.

Where to Look

Before you start painting the exterior of your home check the exterior trim around your home for cracks, holes, loose, damaged or rotting wood. Trim is typically a decorative piece of your home that can be found around windows, doors under gutters, under the roof, and virtually anywhere the exterior would need to repel water from entering your home. Rotting wood is not always visible to the naked eye, make sure to feel the exterior trim on your home, looking for soft and squishy wood. Painting over rotted wood can happen if you’re not careful, and will cause you more problems in the future if it isn’t replaced promptly. Trim board replacement can be simple. Below are some tips to help you with your exterior trim board replacement project.

Find a perfect match

If possible, it is always a good idea to take a piece of the old board with you to the lumber store to get the best match. However if the wood is rotten and you are unable to extract it all in one piece, take good measurements. Measure exactly how long the board is so that you’re not making extra trips to the store. And save the hassle and measure twice before cutting. When cutting, using a miter saw, it will ensure you have perfectly straight lines and perfect measurements.

Replacing Exterior Trim Board

Luckily not all damaged trim boards need replacement, sometimes it’s as easy as adding a nail and re-caulking the exterior trim to the siding! However in some cases, like rotting wood, it’s best to replace the entire trim board, and sometimes the entire exterior trim around a window or door. There are plenty of tools you can use for this job, you can remove the damaged trim by using a pry bar, screwdriver or the claw of a hammer. First you will want to remove old caulking with a box cutter or sturdy putty knife. Next you will want to begin pulling out the nails (this may require puncturing the rotted wood and digging it out if the wood is unsalvageable). In most cases -if the wood is not too rotten- you can leverage the wood with a pry bar or the back of a hammer until you have fully extracted your exterior trim board. Make sure when you are pulling up the trim that you do not dent any of the siding in the process.

Caulk

Caulk and paint your new exterior trim board right away. You do not want your new wood exposed to water or vulnerable to further damage.

How to Install and Paint Interior Trim

Many people believe that baseboards should be painted before installation. However interior trim should always be installed prior to painting. Installing pre painted trims can easily tack on a load of touch ups that could be avoided if you paint the interior trim last. If you are painting the entirety of your room; ceilings, walls, baseboards, etc it is essential that you save this task for the end to avoid touchups from fallen drips and splatters. By following Peak Pros tips for painting interior trim, you can paint a whole room in one go.

Install

First step to painting new interior trim is to install! First measure how long you need your trim to be, cut, and install! When nailing in the baseboards, make sure to push the baseboards securely to the floor and the wall. When your baseboards are properly measured and ready to install use 2 inch nails and a nail gun and nail into the bottom plate right above the floor. This will give the baseboard a sturdy attachment to the wall. If the baseboard leaves a small gap at the top, don’t worry, just add another nail along a stud and then apply caulk to the top of the baseboard.

Caulk

Now it is time to fill in any cracks and gaps with your caulking gun. Most importantly, make sure the caulk you have chosen is a paintable! Start with the corners going bottom up, and smooth into cracks while taking away excess caulk. Next caulk the top of the baseboards filling any gaps. When doing the top of the baseboards, it may be helpful to lay down painters tape on the wall and on the baseboard leaving a small gap for where you are placing the caulking. For final touchups with your caulking gun, fill in any sort of hole created by your nail gun.

Prime & Paint.

Here is the fun part, PAINTING! Now that your baseboards are installed and all holes and gaps have been caulked, it’s time to prime! Peak Pro loves to paint baseboards last so that there is no need for touch ups. This way we can get the job done fast and perfect the first time. Peak Pro loves to use our airless paint sprayer because of the flawless finish it leaves, however if this is not attainable, a medium sized paint brush will get the job done.

Clear out all cabinets

How To Stain Wooden Furniture

Preparation is key when staining wood furniture. It is essential that you first sand down your surface with coarse sandpaper along the natural grain of the wood(lower numbers indicate a coarser grit). If you are staining raw wood, feel free to skip the first and second step!

Second Step:

Thought you were done sanding? Think again! Once your surface is smooth from your first round of sanding, move onto a medium/ finer grit sandpaper (higher numbers indicate a finer grit). Sand until smooth to the touch.

Third Step:

Here’s the easy part; take a moist cloth and wipe away the sawdust. Or use mineral spray on a clean cloth and wipe with the grain of the wood. Although this is the easiest step, it should never be overlooked because you always want a clean surface before you paint or stain wood furniture!

Fourth Step:

Here comes the fun part: STAINING your wood furniture! Get your materials together, like a soft rag or sponge or even a paint sprayer if you have one. Even if you are a professional you will want to prepare your area for any spills or splatters. Before you start staining your wood furniture, take note that the longer the stain is on the wood/the more coats you apply will make for a darker color. Peak Pro recommends 2-3 coats of stain applied evenly with the grain of the wood.

Finally:

Once you have reached your desired color, it is time to apply a varnish finish on you renovated wood furniture. The most common varnish finishes used is polyurethane and Tung oil.

Now a hand masker makes this process really easy, and can cut down the process into just two steps. First you will want to run the masker across the top of the window and smooth out the tape so there are no bubbles or gaps where paint can find its way in. This will leave you with a stream line of painter’s tape attached to your painters plastic that will be hanging just below it in a nice folded fashion.

Second Step:

Now here’s the easy part. Seriously. Pull down the painter’s plastic that you just taped to the top of the window, and cut to desired length. Now the only occasion you won’t be cutting the painter’s plastic is if you have a ginormous window bigger than 6ft. Hopefully you considered that when buying your painter’s plastic because it typically runs 6ft tall.

Last but not least: Tape!

Simply tape the entire edge of the window on the remaining sides of the window. Peak Pro recommends to tape the painter’s plastic down with a few small pieces to secure it before fully lining the periphery with tape. Make sure that you extend the tape enough to cover trim that you don’t want to be painted.

The easiest place to start would be to lay down your drop cloth over the entirety of your deck. One with a plastic backing is best, so that the paint can’t seep through. Then, work your way closer to the exterior wall you are painting. Here we recommend laying down a 2-3in tape in those hard to reach edges, then a layer of painters tape with painters plastic attached. Peak Pro often uses construction paper over the plastic for extra protection. It’s not worth the risk of getting paint on your nice trex deck. Then of course plastic covering all windows and doors adhesed with painters tape.

How to mask your deck when rolling or brushing the exterior of your home

Now this process is much less mess but takes twice the time. This is where you truly chose your battles, more painting time and less preparation versus more preparation and less painting? If preparation isn’t your thing, but you’re not risking it this time with you beautiful deck, here’s how to prep and mask your deck before rolling and brushing. Your biggest concern with painting the exterior of your home with a paint brush or roller, is drips. So it’s best to keep the masking close to the wall. Lay down the drop cloth close to the wall you are painting and extend it roughly 5ft back depending on the angles you’re painting. If you love the sleek shiny look of gloss paint so much that you want to paint it all over the exterior of your home, there are a few things that you should know before you even lie down your drop cloth. In this article Peak Pro Painting will offer you some crucial information for those DIY experts that are thinking of tackling paints with gloss finishes.

Pros:

One reason Peak Pro loves gloss finishes is their ability to reflect lots of light! Gloss paint is typically easy to clean because dust and debris won’t stick to this type of paint. Our clients love to use gloss finishes in high traffic areas like bathrooms and kitchens because of how easy they are to clean. However different finishes reflect light differently. And depending on the level of shine the paint provides, the color will be projected differently. If you want to paint with a gloss finish, first you should know whether you prefer matte, eggshell, satin, semi gloss, or gloss. These all offer a different level of shine matte being the least and gloss being the most shiny of the selections stated.

Cons:

Not all gloss finishes are created equal!

Gloss or Semi-Gloss

Semi gloss paint is a type of finish. It is a very popular finish in high traffic areas and is widely used in bathrooms and kitchens. Gloss and semi-gloss paints are easier to clean and resist scratches better than satin or flat finishes but can actually magnify imperfections on your wall. If you are considering painting with a gloss or semi gloss on the exterior of your home for a little bit of accent color, we recommend keeping it on the trim of your home. Anywhere else on the exterior of your home would appear too shiny.

Satin Finish

However this finish does not hide imperfections, any touchups will stand out! A good satin finish will offer the perfect amount of sheen and will not be overwhelmingly shiny.

Flat or Matte

If you are going to paint a brick, stucco, wood paneling, or a wall with cracks and imperfections, Peak Pro recommends you stick with the Flat or Matte paints. Flat and matte finishes hide imperfections better, but dark paints can also reveal imperfections more so than lighter colors.

1: Masking

First and most importantly you will want to make sure you spend a lot of time on the interior masking. Peak Pro can’t stress this enough, we preach preparation in our interior and exterior painting process! We make sure that our clients floors/ windows and valuables are safe from paint. Not only will you protect you or your clients possessions but makes for an easy cleanup without harsh chemicals or hidden spills. Maskings efficacy truly depends on how well you make a clean tape line. Take your time and make sure your tape doesn’t have any bubbles or gaps. This will help you avoid paint from seeping underneath the tape. Last step in masking, is taping painters plastic over your tapeline. This is super important if you are painting near carpet!

2: Sanding

It is important to prepare your surface to be painted by taking a light sandpaper to take off the glossy shine. The smooth sheen on stained wood makes it difficult for a new layer of paint to stick. By removing the sheen and etching the surface you will be able to give the primer something to bite onto. Keep in mind that the sandpaper you use should not be too rough, you are only trying to take off the gloss!

3: Primer

Now you can’t use just any primer when painting on top of previously stained wood! You will need a thick stain blocking primer. A thick stain blocking primer is necessary to painting a stained railing to make make sure the previous stain doesn’t bleed through the paint.

4: Paint!

Now it’s time to get creative and apply two coats of paint of your choice. Peak Pro is a big fan of high powered paint sprayers because of the clean look. However if you are choosing to use a paintbrush for painting the railing, make sure to paint upwards so you get an even coat and less mess. Paint with care and quickly to avoid brush strokes that occur from the paint drying too quick. Watch out for runs and drips on railing, this can happen when the paint was laid on too thick in combination with a steep angle. Make sure to brush out the runs in the paint so that they do not harden into an uneven surface.

1: How to get the perfect lines: Seal the tape with a bit of paint!

Any painter knows that painting a perfectly straight line is nearly impossible. You have to carefully think about your direction, pressure, and saturation. However you can achieve this perfect line without the drips by creating a seal along the painters tape. This should be done when starting your painting project and after you have properly masked your perimeter. When you start painting, brush a bit of paint along the tape edge to create an additional seal against paint bleeding under the tape.

2: Use Painter’s Tape When Painting With a Foam Roller

Foam rollers help get the job done faster, and smoother than a paint brush on large walls. But more often than not, when rolling at high speed, paint tends to fly off and create a nice spatter paint all around the room. If you want to avoid the splatter paint look on your carpet or hardwood floors, use painters tape and masking paper. Extending the painters tape with masking tape will protect most woodwork from splatter and drips. Peak Pro recommends using around a 3in masking paper so that the paper creates a shelf, protecting anything beneath it. For protecting floorboards and carpets, it would be best to use a longer masking paper that will flop down and provide more floor coverage from foam roller spatters.

3: Painters Tape Can Be Creative!

Want a cool modern geometric pattern on your wall but you aren’t the best artist? Create negative space with painting tape. First make some cool geometric patterns with painters tape and remove all bubbles from tape. Then paint the wall like normal. Finally, remove the tape. With this process you will achieve crisp contrasting lines exposing the base color underneath.

4: Yes- There is a right way to pull off tape!

When done painting, remove the tape after the last coat has dried. In a well ventilated area paint typically takes 30mins to an hour to dry. There are several things that can go wrong when peeling off painters tape. Firstly if you wait too long to peel the tape, it will become difficult to remove and adhere to the surface and possibly pull off paint or not come off at all. This can be avoided by not leaving tape on for too long, or by pulling the tape off at a 45 degree angle gently and consistently. Second common mistake is pulling the tape off too fast. This can remove some of your fresh paint if it is still wet. Pulling the tape off too fast can even rip the paint off underneath the tape. If you see a layer of paint that looks like it will lift away along with the tape despite perfect painting practice, use a putty knife to lightly break the seal between the wall and the tape before you remove the tape.

5: Temperature matters!

It is important to consider which how you pull off painters tape when in extreme temperatures. Extreme temperatures can affect how easily the tape comes off. Cold temperatures can make the tape crack and break and come off unevenly while hot temperatures can make the tape stickier, leaving adhesive behind. How to Spray a House Exterior

Justin Shultz with Peak Pro Painting here today to show you how to spray the exterior of your home. If you are thinking of taking on the task of painting the exterior of your home you might want to consider using a spray method. This will speed up the process substantially!

First step:

Make sure to fully mask anything that you don’t want to be painted. Over spray is bound to happen, and it is best to assume that anything in the near area will get paint on it. However this can be prevented with the proper masking. Masking for spraying the exterior of a home is more extensive than just lining the trim of the house. Masking should be done over any window with plastic and adhered with tape. Patio Furniture, fences, brick, and the ground are all at risk of getting painted. On windy days, even your neighbors homes or cars could be at risk of the paint traveling farther than anticipated. Proper masking is a necessary to ensure a nice clean finished look without messy splatters.

Second Step:

Spray in a consistent left to right pattern, this fluid motion will make sure you don’t forget where you are spraying and ensures a nice even coverage. Make sure you keep the sprayer moving so not to over saturate the paint. The optimum distance to keep the sprayer from the surface is around 10in to 14in.

Third Step:

Make sure you are spraying at an 45 degree upward angle so that you can get the underside of the paneling. The direction when spray painting can have a dramatic effect on the final appearance. Typically a horizontal direction across the surface works best.

Fourth step:

Overlap your spray at least 50 percent to guarantee an even spray coat. By overlapping your spray you can avoid gaps and light spots.

Fifth Step:

Peak Pro encourages you to make sure you are using the right spray tip. To get the best coverage for large areas we recommend using either a 5 11 or 5 17 spay tip.The 5 17 spray tip will use more paint but will help save you time.

Sixth Step:

How to Paint Interior Doors

Our interior doors get a lot of use and abuse throughout their lives, especially for homeowners with children or pets. Repainting interior doors is an important part of updating your aesthetic and maintaining a clean indoor home environment. In this post, the residential painting professionals at Peak Pro Painting are going to share their tips and tricks to perfectly paint interior doors.

How many doors are you going to repaint?

The size of your project is going to help you determine whether you should use a paint sprayer or a hand roller. If you’re painting 25 doors, it would take a long time to paint them all with a hand roller and brush. Similarly, if you’re painting two doors, it would be silly to go through all of the hassle of using a paint sprayer. A good rule of thumb is if you’re going to paint more than 5 doors, it’s worth it to use a sprayer.

Set up a containment site in your garage

Whether you’re using a hand roller and brush, or paint sprayer, it’s ideal to set up a containment area in your garage to repaint your interior doors. We recommend setting up your painting station in an indoor area, like the garage or a work shed, to avoid getting airborne debris on your door while the paint dries. Lay down several pieces of contractor plastic and/or paper below your work area and position two sawhorses to support your door.

Remove the door from it’s hinges

There are several techniques to safely remove a door from it’s hinges. A spring tool will allow you to quickly and easily remove the pin from a door hinge without a hammer. Otherwise, you’ll need a flathead screwdriver and a hammer . Once you have removed the door from it’s hinges, carry it out to your containment area.

Remove the hardware

Before we start painting the door we want to make sure that we have removed all of the additional hardware, such as the door knob, any additional locking mechanisms, mail slots, etc. Be sure to keep your screws and hardware organized for easy re-installation after your door has finished drying. Mask off any hardware that isn’t easily removed with a reliable painter’s tape.

Prep the door for painting

If your door was previously painted with an oil-based paint, you will need to sand the door surface before you apply any primer or paint. If your previous paint was a water-based paint, you are mostly like ok to skip the sanding step and move right along to primer! Apply a consistent coat of primer to your door finish and allow to dry. This step is particularly important if you are painting the door a lighter shade than it’s previous finish.

Roll or Spray Paint your Front Door

Your primer is dry and it’s finally time to paint your door! Depending on the number of doors you are painting, you’ve either chosen to use a hand roller and brush combo or you’re using a paint sprayer. Apply a consistent coat of paint to your entire door surface. Be sure to paint the edges of your door too! Allow one side of your door to dry completely before flipping your door over to paint the reverse side. Make sure both sides are thoroughly dry before your return the door to it’s frame!

Run Water Through Sprayer

Turn down the pressure on your paint sprayer to a medium-low pressure. Start running the first 5 gallon bucket of water through the sprayer. When you have drained the first bucket, start running the second 5 gallon bucket of water through the sprayer. You will know that your airless paint sprayer in clean when the water coming of the sprayer no longer has any tint of your paint color.

Prepare Your Sprayer for Storage

Once you have ensured that there are no residual paint in your sprayer it is time to prepare it for storage. Wipe any excess paint off the outside of your sprayer and make sure it is clean and dry. Tapered Brushes for Trim

A tapered paint brush has an angled edge, which makes it ideal for painting your interior trim. Hold the painting brush with the tallest edge towards the outside of the surface you’re painting. This will help push excess paint towards the inside of the painting space and help you avoid sloppy edges.

Synthetic or Natural Bristles

Choosing the right brush for your interior painting project depends on the type of paint you’ll be using. If you’re going to be using any type of water-based finish you’ll need a brush with synthetic bristles that will not absorb the paint. If you’re using an oil-based paint you can use natural or synthetic bristles. Also consider the thickness of the paint when choosing which bristle is right for the job. A thicker paint requires a stiffer brush. A polyester/nylon brush will be stronger than a 100% nylon brush.

How to Paint Stucco Finish

Prep Your Stucco

Before you begin applying paint to your stucco finish, you may have some cracks you need to repair. First you’re going to adequately clean the textured stucco finish. Back Roll Paint Your Stucco

Before you spray or roll paint onto your stucco wall, start with a layer of back rolling. Back roll your paint by rolling the paint roller down the wall in a downward motion. This will make sure that you apply a layer of paint over the “up-side” of the stucco wall texture. This technique is especially important if you have decided to spray paint your surface. Back rolling the surface will allow the paint to fill all of the pores in the stucco and reduce the chances of your old paint color showing through several weeks later.

Apply Your Finishing Coat

After you have back rolled your stucco, now apply your final paint finish, whether this is with a hand roller or with a consistent spray paint. Your technique for the finishing coat is really a matter of personal preference. There are many who prefer hand rolling or find it to be more accessible for DIY exterior home updates. Anyone who has ever handled paint knows one simple truth – painting can quickly become messy. There’s no such thing as a perfect paint job! Here’s what to do if (and when) you spill paint on a carpet.

How To Remove Paint From Carpet:

While repainting a wall in your home, you accidentally spilled some paint on the carpet. What do you do? First of all, stop everything you’re doing! Next, retrieve a bucket of warm water and a few rags. Soak the rag in the water and scrub the paint stain away. Use as much water as it takes to remove paint and get the stain completely out.

Keep in mind: paint removal products are unnecessary, unless the paint has dried already. Keep an eye out for paint drips as you work so you can remove paint quickly using water. It’s faster and easier than paint remover!

Preparing Your Airless Paint Sprayer For The Winter Months

Winterizing your airless paint sprayer is essential if you want to avoid it becoming damaged. Follow these steps to ensure its longevity:

Make sure the airless paint sprayer contains oil before you begin the winterization process.
Add a few cap-fulls per quart of mineral spirits.
Add many drops of Graco Throat Seal Liquid to the cup and rod while the pump cycles the protectant through.
When you turn off your sprayer after using the pump protectant, try to do it so that the rod is in the down position, in the fluid section.

With these few simple steps, your airless paint sprayer will be ready to hibernate over the long winter! Just like with the water pipes in your house, you must prepare your pressure washer for the winter months. If water remains in the washer, it can freeze, expand, and break your pump.

Here’s how to winterize your pressure washer:

Place the injection tube into a pail of clean water and run the pressure washer on the lowest setting for two minutes.
Depending on the local climate and weather, you may want to consider doing an antifreeze flush as well – something we always do here in Colorado.
Turn off the engine and the main water supply to finish.

Now, your pressure washer should be completely dry and devoid of excess water. Store it in a dry place over the winter.

Start on one corner of the wallpaper and peel it off like you would a sticker. This is the most basic technique, and often leaves behind a layer of backing. If there is residual backing left after the initial peel, use a scraper to remove it.

Remember: overspray and paint drips are a painter’s worst nightmare! Here’s how we mask baseboards to avoid getting unwanted paint on them.

Materials you’ll need

We always use a 3M masker, 1″ tape and 6″ masking paper. We set up the tape and masking paper in the masker so that we’re able to mask one entire wall’s-worth of baseboard at once.

The masking process

Run the masker along the whole strip of baseboard; try to keep the tape in a straight line, with no cuts. This gives the end result a clean, professional look. Do one wall at a time!

What is a Trex Deck?

Trex Decks are composite decks made from recycled material. They’re a great alternative to wood decks, as they look great and require little maintenance!

How do I clean paint that’s dripped onto my Trex Deck?

When painting the exterior of your home, it’s possible to accidentally stain your deck with paint drips or overspray. If this happens, there is a product that can help get the paint or stain off: Krud Kutter , which you can find at Home Depot. We’ve found it to be the best product that cleans Trex Decks without damaging the surface.

Cleaning the deck is simple. Spray the painted or stained area on the Trex with the Krud Kutter, then let it sit for a few minutes. Next, scrub it lightly with a plastic brush until the paint is removed. Lastly, rinse the affected area with water. That’s it!

Overspray is bound to happen – scrape it off!

When painting the siding around your windows, it’s very common to get some overspray or paint drips onto the exterior of the windows. If this happens, don’t worry – there’s a safe, easy way to clean it up!

Grab your paint scraper with a four-inch blade (or buy one from the store – they’re cheap) and scrape the paint away. That’s it! You can even apply a bit of pressure for the bits that are hard to remove; the blade won’t damage the glass.

If you don’t already have one in your arsenal, consider adding a paint scraper to your toolkit for those times you need to remove paint from your windows.

Today we’ll be discussing how and why we mask our clients’ roofline before we start painting. Read on to learn how Peak Pro protects your roof while we paint!

Why we mask the roofline before we start painting

We always begin our rooftop projects by masking the roofline. We do this because we want to paint areas of the structure that have already been painted, and not the roof itself. Protecting the roof from paint is a very high priority.

How we mask the roofline and paint around it

In preparation to paint around a roofline, we first gather our materials: 12-inch masking paper, masking tape, and a device called a masker to dispense the tape along the paper. Next, we install the masking paper onto the roof along the siding (or stucco) using the masker. For extra protection against paint overspray, we always lay down two layers of paper (24 inches).

We always work in sections when painting around a roofline. Masking tape needs to be taken off the surface of the roof as soon as possible after painting is completed, or it can become very difficult to remove. Also, if there happens to be any paint overspray, we can clean it up immediately after it occurs while the paint is still wet.

How to Remove Paint from Cement

Have you ever accidentally spilled paint on your driveway or sidewalk, without the know-how to get it off? You’re not alone! Today, we share with you the Peak Pro process for removing paint from cement.

How to remove wet paint from cement

It’s simple! If the paint is still wet, simply use water and a plastic brush to remove it from the cement.

How to remove dry paint from cement

This process is a bit more involved, but still pretty simple! You’ll need a latex-based paint remover (like Lift Off), a wire brush and warm water. First, apply the paint remover to the area of the cement you want to clean, and let it sit for one minute. Next, pour the warm water over the cement and gently scrub it with the wire brush. This will eventually lift the paint from the cement. In some instances where the paint is especially dry, you may have to repeat this process multiple times.

How to Properly Clean a Paintbrush

No matter the size or scope of a painting project, clean-up is always an important step in the process. In this post we’re going to share with you how we clean our paint brushes so they’re always fresh and ready to use for our upcoming projects.

How to clean your paintbrush

First, you’ll need to find a place to clean the brush – since there’s a chance of paint spraying onto nearby surfaces, try to avoid the kitchen! A garage or basement sink would work well.

If the paint is still wet, simply use warm water to rinse it off of the brush. If the paint has had a chance to dry and harden, consider using a wire brush in addition to warm water. To effectively clean out the dried paint, move the wire brush downward from the top of the bristles to their base.

Drying and caring for your clean paintbrushes

Once you’ve cleaned the old paint from the paintbrush, place it somewhere to dry. To ensure the brush dries into its proper form, make sure the bristles are straightened and the brush is lying flat.

When it comes to caring for your equipment, we always recommend planning ahead. Always make sure to clean your paintbrushes as soon as you’re finished using them – this makes it easier to remove the paint from them and keeps the bristles healthy for a longer period of time. Dry and store your brushes somewhere safe so you get as much future use out of them as possible!

How To Clean Paint Off Of Vinyl Windows

Is it possible to clean paint off my vinyl windows?

One cleaning issue that can result from painting is overspray or dripping paint on vinyl windows. Many people think it’s impossible to clean this off, but we assure you: getting paint off your vinyl windows is simple! How do we accomplish this at Peak Pro? We prefer to use Lift Off, a latex-based paint remover product that can be found at major hardware stores like the Home Depot.

How does Peak Pro use Lift Off to remove paint from vinyl windows?

Here’s the simple process we use when we’re on a job: first, we spray the Lift Off onto the oversprayed area on the window. We let it sit for 30-60 seconds, then wipe it with a clean rag. If the layer of paint we’re trying to remove is thick, we choose a dish sponge or fine-grit sanding block instead of a rag, then lightly rub the paint off. With a small amount of Lift Off, the proper removal tools, and a light touch, we’re able to remove the oversprayed paint from our clients’ vinyl windows every time!

How To Remove Latex Paint From Flagstone

Cleaning and Protecting Your Flagstone From Paint

When cleaning paint off of flagstone, you unfortunately run the risk of damaging it. One option to remedy this is to simply flip over the flagstone. If you can’t, or simply prefer to clean it, there is a way to do that as well. If you accidentally drip paint onto your flagstone, always remember: the sooner you clean it off, the easier it is. If the paint hasn’t dried, water and a rag will get it right off without much risk of damaging the stone.

How “Lift Off” Removes Paint From Flagstone

If the paint sits on the flagstone for longer than one hour, you’ll need a water-based latex paint remover to help loosen up the paint. We like to use the safe and effective product “Lift Off.”

Here’s our process: spray the Lift Off onto the paint and let it sit for 20-60 seconds – the longer the better, but don’t let it dry onto the surface! After that, take a wire brush and lightly brush the surface of the flagstone in a circular motion until the paint is completely gone. You can always use more product for tougher paint stains.

How and Why We Backroll When Painting Brick and Concrete

What is Backrolling?

First and foremost, what is backrolling? Here’s an explanation of the Peak Pro process: First, spray a thick coat of primer or paint onto the brick or concrete. While the paint is still wet, roll it in deeply with a thick nap roller. To ensure the paint effectively coats the entire surface of the brick or concrete, we recommend using a ½ inch nap. The process is made much faster and easier with the help of an assistant who can spray the paint while you backroll, or vice versa.

Why do we Backroll?

At Peak Pro Painting, the reason we backroll when working on brick or concrete surfaces for the first time is to ensure the primer or paint reaches every hole, ridge, nook, and cranny of the surface. We also do it to ensure complete satisfaction for our customers: a solid coat of paint that has been backrolled onto the brick or concrete will last far longer than one that hasn’t seen the same treatment.

Choosing Wall Colors and Accent Wall Colors

Take a color from something that will be in the room, such as a picture on the wall, a piece of furniture or even a pillow.

Color decks are sold at most paint retailers and can be very helpful. Pick out two to four colors from the color deck.

Buy quarts (smaller amounts of paint) and do a few test patches on the walls. This will help to get a bigger visual of how the colors look when on the wall.

If you can not decide on it right away, give it a couple of days and go look at the colors again, sometimes that helps. If you still can’t make up your mind, remember paint is not permanent (just look at what you’re about to paint over!)

Refinishing a Stained, Wooden Door

Peak Pro Painters give the know-how on refinishing a stained, wooden door

A wooden front door can take a lot of abuse from Colorado weather. Sun, snow and rain all cause the finish to deteriorate and wood to fade, crack and wear. We are going to go over the easiest and most effective way to sand and refinish a door!

The first step is to remove the door from its hinges
Once its removed from the hinges, place the wooden door on a sturdy flat surface such as two saw horses or a sturdy table
Remove hardware
Then, you want to sand off the old finish using an orbital sander. Start with a lower grit sandpaper like a 100 grit and movde to a 120 until the old finish is removed and the wood is smooth and even
Clean all dust off the wood with a vacuum and a damp rag
Next, finish the door with UV resistant exterior polyutherane with either a brush or a sprayer. Sand the wood with a 220 grit sandpaper then apply another coat. You can also apply a gloss coat for extra protection
Finally, put your hardware back on and put the door back on the hinges

The best way to clean up over spray / paint splatters from windows is to let the over spray fully dry, then scrape it with a sharp blade. Start from one corner and slowly work your way across to the other side of the window. Once you have the glass fully scraped, you can take a wet rag and wipe any dust off of the window.

How to Paint an Interior Accent Wall

Color Ideas for Accent Walls

Step One: Prep Your Accent Wall

The first thing you need to do is mask the floor about 3-4 feet out with plastic or tarps. If there are any old nail or screw holes, fill them with caulking. Then tape off the walls, baseboards and ceilings around your accent wall. Use 2″ tape so you don’t get paint on the other walls. Once you have tape around your accent wall, apply caulking to the tape lines. (the caulking is used to create a seal which helps make good lines with no bleeding) Once you apply the caulking, take a wet rag and run it over the caulking to get rid of excess caulking. Once this is done your ready to paint!

Step Two: Trim & Paint

Start by cutting in the edges and corners of your accent wall with a brush. Remember to paint on to the tape so that the tape can create straight lines. Once you have it all cut in, take your roller and roll the wall in a thick, even pattern. Some colors may need 2-3 coats to fully cover the old color.

Step Three: Allow Wall to Dry & Remove Tape

Always wait for the paint to dry before removing masking tape to make sure that the paint covered well and you don’t have any light spots. Remove all tape and masking and wait atleast 24 hours for paint to cure before hanging pictures or putting furniture against the freshly painted wall.

How to Paint a Front Door

At Peak Pro Painting we believe the secret to a perfect paint job is in the details. Finishing touches like trim, shutters, and doors will make your home stand out. But how do you execute these details with professional precision? Our Denver painting contractors are here to share their tips on how to paint a front door like a pro!

1. Prep the Door

The first thing you want to do when painting a front door is to take it off the hinges. Once the door is removed, make sure that the door is completely clean and dry.Carefully mask off the door handle and any windows that might be on the door. Once that is done, scrape and sand any areas that have peeling, sagging or drip marks. Then, prime the areas that have been sanded. Once all of your prep work is done your door is ready to be sprayed.

2. Spray the Door

When spraying a front door, you always want to make sure you find a place where there is no wind, such as a garage or basement. Always take your time and spray it on thick, even, and in a vertical pattern. Always make sure you give the door at least 2-3 hours to completely dry before touching any of the painted areas. Once the paint is dry you can unmask the door and put it back on the hinges.

How To Prep Stucco for Painting

We get questions all the time from Colorado residential homeowners that don’t know much about how to prep stucco for painting. Maybe it’s because there are so few stucco homes in Colorado! At Peak Pro Painting we want to ease your concerns about prepping your stucco house to ensure a quality, long-lasting paint job. Follow these easy steps to prep your stucco home for painting.

Step 1. Prepare a Clean Surface:

The first step in getting your stucco home ready to be painted is to make sure you thoroughly power wash the surface. Colorado homes get filthy through the years to begin with but stucco gets even dirtier than your typical wood siding home. All those cracks and crevices hide the dirt so it is important to take the time to get a clean surface.

Step 2. Caulk Cracks in Your Home’s Siding

Secondly, let’s talk about the cracks all over the house. Some may be larger than others. Most painters here in Colorado might want to fill those cracks with an acrylic caulking but that is a HUGE MISTAKE. I repeat, DO NOT USE SMOOTH CAULKING ON STUCCO. Smooth caulking does not look attractive on rough textured stucco surfaces. My recommendation is to use a textured caulking or textured elastomeric patches. This one tip will save you the heartache of having a home that looks like there are spider webs all over the home.

3. Apply a Patch to Damaged Areas

Lastly, we need to patch larger areas that have been damaged. Stucco patch is easy to mix and apply. If there is only a few of these areas, you can purchase pre-made stucco patch. But for homes that have several areas of stucco damage, you can buy stucco patch you can mix yourself. You just add it with water til you get a thick consistency that isn’t too dry. Then, apply stucco patch with a rubber float found in any paint store. The KEY to making sure stucco patch doesn’t crumble in a year is to allow it to FULLY dry before applying paint. You’ll be able to see the edges drying first and as long as there are no more dark spots it is ready to be painted.

With these tips, your stucco home is NOW ready for the fresh paint!

Handheld Sprayers for Interior Paint Jobs

At Peak Pro Painting we think using a sprayer is the best way to get a consistent interior or exterior paint finish. Our professional painting contractors use handheld sprayers for interior paint jobs to allow for comfortable use and a PERFECT finished product.

Our preferred handheld sprayer for interior paint is the Graco TrueCoat II Plus Airless Paint Sprayer offers a wide variety of features and benefits. Its compact design allows for completing small projects with ease, with the trusted reliability of a Graco sprayer.

This particular spray gun is very simple to use. Simply fill the paint cup with paint and fasten back onto the sprayer and prime the pump with the flip-up primer switch.

When ready to spray, you can adjust the pressure of the sprayer with the easy dial system, depending on the viscosity of the material being sprayed.

Spraying is the same as with a detached gun/hose on a traditional sprayer. One must make sure not to spray in an arched pattern, but rather a smooth side to side motion to allow for even coating.

Multiple spray tips are available depending on the desired spray fan size and material being sprayed.

Cleanup is simple as well and takes about 5-10 minutes; much faster than a traditional airless sprayer that take 20-30 minutes.

The sprayer’s design is great for resting on 5 gallon buckets as well during cleanup.

This model runs on a standard electrical outlet and an extension cord is required.

Additional filler cup bags may be purchased as well to allow for easier cleanup.

The main downfall of this product is it’s weight; when filled with paint it easily weighs over 10 pounds, which will make ones wrists and shoulders tired and fatigued after prolonged periods of spraying. A traditional paint sprayer wins in this situation.

Overall, this is a great buy for anyone looking to tackle their own small painting projects, such as individual rooms or doors/cabinets. This sprayer is also great for spraying trim work.

The cost is well worth the time saved on painting versus traditional brushing and rolling and will achieve professional end results.

Avoiding Dry Rot

Dry rot is a dangerous situation for a house because it can lead to moisture damage on the inside of the home if the moisture travels far enough and also mold.

The most common areas for dry rot to occur are on horizontal surfaces, such as window- sills, rail tops and deck boards. It can also occur on vertical boards such as trim and siding boards below leaky gutters or downspouts.

Repair for dry rot can be as simple as gutting the wood and filling it with wood putty/filler or replacing the board completely.

Trim and siding boards are usually simple to replace; window and door casements are very challenging on often require entire casement replacement. Just one windowsill replacement can cost $300-$500, depending on the type of casement.

Many homeowners will let a home go too long before painting and the resin in the paint breaks down completely, allowing moisture to seep through the paint coat into the wood.

The key to avoiding dry rot is to maintain your home! Make sure that all cracks are sealed up with a durable, paintable caulking and prime/paint any areas that are wearing thin on paint.

Most homes need to be repainted every 8-10 years, depending on the quality of the previously used paint.

Interior Painting Done Right

Spraying the interior? That’s crazy talk, paint will get everywhere!! …Unless it is done right. Before we get into how it is done right let’s talk about why spraying gives an advantage on interior painting. First, spraying gives a much thicker coat than rolling with half of the effort. Ever tried to paint an interior wall red with a roller? It could take upwards of 3-4 coats!!! When you spray on the interior you could have that wall any hue of red you want with 1-2 coats. Second, the consistency of the coat while rolling versus spraying makes a big difference. While rolling, you’ll notice that the roller itself has fine hairs on it which will actually drag through the paint as you’re applying it to the wall giving more texture than what was just on the drywall itself. Now, there are some professionals who are better at minimizing this but you will never get a perfectly consistent coat. When spraying, since there is nothing that actually touches the walls while painting so the coat comes out much smoother when the sprayer is handled by a professional.

But what about the paint everywhere? Okay, I’ll answer that now. The biggest key to any paint job will be…MASKING. Masking accounts for at least 80% of any good interior paint job. If your contractor doesn’t understand that concept, it’s time to find a new one. The very last thing you want is paint on your carpet, or furniture, or that fancy grandfather clock that has been handed down through generations that is irreplaceable. Think of it this way, would you be more comfortable with the contractor who lays down one dropsheet under the wall getting done or the one who puts plastic around your entire room covering all surfaces that aren’t getting painted?

Just remember, next time you look at getting your interior painted just remember the most important question: Do you spray or roll?

Achieve Straight Lines While Painting

For smoother surfaces , use the Green-colored tape. As with all tapes, make sure to firmly press the edge into place. Allow the paint to cure for at least several hours, so that you don’t rip the new paint while peeling away.

For textured surfaces, the Orange tape is amazing. Simply lay the tape, press firmly and coat with the included textured surface liquid. The end result will be VERY straight lines on the rough surfaces.

When picking a Colorado house painter , remember first off not to accept the lowest bid. A lower bid might come from a contractor who is cutting corners either with their materials or labor. In the painting industry, contractors can water down paint or skip necessary preparation, which will ultimately cause your paint job to fail sooner.

When choosing a Colorado house painter look for the following:

Insurance:
Colorado paint contractors should have at least $1 million of Liability Insurance and Full Worker’s Compensation. This is one way contractors look to cut corners. If a painting company doesn’t have insurance, then a $5,000 paint job could turn to a $250,000 dollar medical bill.

A quality company will spend more time at the estimate to give you a detailed bid with a price freeze. Ask yourself: Is this company on time? Do they look professional? Do they use industry standards? Do they have a detailed contract? Do they offer a warranty? Are they binded in their agreement to only collect final payment when you’re fully satisfied with the job? These are all important when selecting a Denver painting contractor.

How to Cut a Straight Line While Painting:

It’s easier than it sounds. A perfectly straight line of paint where your wall meets your ceiling. Maybe you have tried countless times with blue painters tape or maybe you have invested in ceiling paint. We thing there is a better way. We took a few moments to demonstrate a little technique we like to use when painting interior walls.

Step by Step: How to Cut a Straight Line While Painting

1) Load a high-quality, angled paint brush (such as a Purdy or Wooster) with 1″ depth of paint or other material. Don’t skimp on price with brushes – You want to purchase the best.

2) Grip the brush like a pen around the brush head, not by the handle. Use your index finger as a guide for cutting the line and lightly grip the brush head with the rest of your fingers and palm of your hand.

3) Wipe excess paint off of brush bristles first; then angle the brush towards the area you want to cut the line.

4) Move your hand slowly…Focus your line of site just beyond the bristles of the brush and the edge you are cutting.
Many rookies will look at the brush instead-Don’t do this, you’ll paint over the edge! Just like walking or driving, you must focus in what’s ahead

5) Reload brush and repeat.

Drywall Primer: These are actually “sealers” that encase bare drywall and give the top finish coat a smooth surface and uniform finish.

Latex Enamel Undercoat: Use before painting with semi-gloss and gloss paint to ensure uniform finish and gloss. Light sanding is recommended to help with paint application and prevent “sagging” and “flashing”.

Bonding Primer: Formulated for slippery surfaces like tile, laminate and glass. Sand the surface first with 220 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper.

Concrete Primer: Use to smooth out porous concrete surfaces.

Stain-blocking Primer: Great for blocking bleed-through from dirt, smoke, wood sap/tannin, and water. Both oil and latex are available, but oil is best for blocking water.

Vapor Barrier Primer: Recommended in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens that trap moisture.

How to Powerwash a House

It is important to keep your paint job well maintained.Simply power washing once a year can add life to your house. As the leading Denver home painters we wanted to provide a few tips to properly power wash your home.

Step One: Ensure Your Home is Properly Sealed

First, make sure to close all windows, doors, vents, etc.

Step Two: Identify and Treat Mold and Mildew

Second, identify any mold or mildew on siding, trim, or other areas. Use a product such as “Mold Avenger” or other bio-degradable mold killers and light water & bleach mix for mildew. Most power washers have intake hoses for mold/mildew agents. Simply add the mix to power wash.

Step Three: Powerwash With Proper Sweeps

Last, powerwash the structure, standing at a safe distance of at least 5 feet away to prevent damage to surface. Start up high on a ladder with soffits and fascia/gutters and work your way down, “sweeping” dirty areas downwards with the spray. Avoid close contact with wood, plants, skin/eyes and other delicate surfaces. Use a wide spray tip for larger areas and a narrow tip for narrow areas, such as trim and fascia. Most power washer nozzles will be adjustable.

Each side of an average sized home will take around a half hour to powerwash when done correctly.

Spraying vs Brushing Paint: Which is Better?

If you spend any amount of time in the painting industry, you’ll hear some surprisingly strong opinions on this topic. These are the main three myths we’ve come up against:

#1: “Spraying makes paint look cloudy.”

False . This can be attributed entirely to user error. Sometimes when spraying, painters will follow the spray with a roller, using a technique called “backrolling”. Cloudiness results from backrolling over paint that is already tacky or nearly dry. The bottom line: done correctly, paint applied with a sprayer is indiscernible from paint that was rolled or brushed on.

#2: “Brushed paint gives better coverage.”

False. Brushed or rolled paint will almost always require at least two coats in order to achieve compete color coverage. This is because brush bristles or the sponge of a roller nap essentially drag paint off your surface at the same time as they apply it, resulting in a streaky or splotchy coverage that allows the previous color to clearly show through. Sprayers avoid this issue entirely because they do not make contact with the painted surface.

#3: “You need a brush or roller in order to push the paint into your siding.”

We’re gonna ride the fence on this one. This is true in some cases, but not always; it depends entirely upon what type of siding you have. For stucco or very rough wood siding, using a brush or roller may be the best way to ensure a complete coating. For milled lumber siding, cardboard composite siding, or Hardibacker , a high-pressure airless sprayer is perfect for coating and will also ensure that any small cracks are completely sealed.

So, spraying or rolling? The debate wages on, probably because there is no right answer. The best thing you can do for your home is to is to make sure you understand all of your options.

Three Essential Steps to Prepare A Roller For Painting

A roller can be an indispensable tool for any painter. Used correctly, they provide a smooth, even finish while allowing you to work quickly with few pauses to reload paint.

Step One: De-Fuzz Your New Roller

You should always start by de-fuzzing your new roller nap. For this, you’ll need a 5-in-1 tool. Quickly scrape the curved blade on the 5-in-1 tool along the length of the roller nap, on all sides, until the roller stops shedding. Taking a few extra minutes to do this will keep your finish smooth because it removes loose fibers that would otherwise have caused your paint to clump.

Step Two: Dampen the Roller for Even Absorption

Next, lightly dampen the roller nap, scraping off excess water with the 5-in-1 tool. This will help your paint to absorb more evenly into the roller.

Step Three: Correctly Load The Roller

Lastly, it is important to load the roller correctly. To do this, roll down the roller grate or pan into the paint, do not dip the roller directly into the paint and roll upward to remove the excess. Continue this motion with short, even strokes until the roller is evenly loaded. This will allow for easier cleanup and will help you achieve a much more uniform coat of paint. Go try it!

Primer: What it Will Do, What it Won’t Do, and How to Get the Most Benefit From It

Primer is a vital tool that you can use to help your painting project go more smoothly. However, there are many misconceptions surrounding how it works that may cause you to expect irrational benefits or use it incorrectly. We’d like to clear some of those up for you:

Primer WILL:

Improve paint adhesion: Good primer will adhere well to any surface for which it is made. The same is NOT true for paint. By priming first, you are creating a sort of emulsion between the paint and the surface, which will help maximize the life of your paint job by preventing peeling, bubbles, and blisters.

Improve paint coverage: Definitely DO NOT skip the primer when you are doing a drastic color change or trying to cover over a pattern or design of some sort. *TIP: Tint your primer to match your paint color by mixing in just a little of the paint. This will help with color coverage better than plain white primer.

Block SOME stains from bleeding through: Primer will help your paint cover over blemishes such as marker scribbles, food dyes, and general age and dinginess.

Primer WILL NOT:

Prevent mold or rust: There are certain primers that are specially formulated to help block old mold or rust from showing through a new coat of paint, (try Zinsser 1-2-3 Primer , sealer and stain killer,) but do not expect ordinary multipurpose primer to handle this.

Allow you to paint over metal, plastic, or other non-porous surfaces: Simply using a general-purpose primer will not make your paint adhere to surfaces like these. You must use a specialty primer that is designed specifically for helping to bond paint to such a surface. Try KWAL Waterborne DTM Bonding Primer .

Erase cracks and other imperfections: While it is true that primer is thicker than paint, you still can’t rely on it to hide defects. It will simply create a bubble over the top of the crack or hole, and when it is dry, the bubble will pop, and you’ll be right where you started. Use caulk or painter’s putty instead.

We get an average of 300 days of sunshine here in Colorado, which is nothing to complain about, but it really takes a toll on the exterior paint that protects our homes.

Fading exterior paint gives your home a “washed” or “worn” look and is quite unsightly. Your neighbors won’t like you and your HOA will disown you, but the issue of fading actually goes deeper than the cosmetic level.

When the sun beats down on your home, harmful UV rays actually break down the paint and the resins turn to a chalky, bleached substance. This means that those resins are no longer protecting your home.

Spraying vs. rolling is a topic that comes up frequently when homeowners are discussing their exterior paint decisions with a professional contractor. At Peak Pro Painting, we believe it is a common misconception that brushing and rolling provides a better quality paint application than spraying, although there are certain instances when a roller can be more efficient.

When to Use a Roller for Painting:

Using a roller does help the coating to soak in and penetrate the wood. Therefore, when using a stain, which is meant to soak into the wood, it is best to use a roller or to spray and then back-roll to force the coating to seep in.

However, paint is meant to sit on top of the wood and protect it by creating a waterproof layer, so it’s unnecessary to try and force it into the wood. Instead, you want to apply a thick, consistent coat on top.

The Advantages of Spraying Paint:

There are several advantages to spraying. For one, it’s quicker and more efficient. Since it takes less time, it’s also cheaper for homeowners who are paying to have it done. The most important advantage though, is that (when done correctly by a professional) spraying creates a more consistent, flawless coat. It doesn’t leave brush or roller marks, which are in fact inconsistencies in thickness.

For instance, when rolling onto a surface, the painter dips the roller nap into his paint tray and has a lot of paint on it initially. He begins to roll the paint onto the surface, starting with a thick coat, which becomes thinner and thinner as he continues to move the roller.

A client brought up a good point recently: that when spraying a side of a home, the spray lines will overlap in certain areas and not in other areas, thus creating an uneven coat. This is absolutely true! Unless it’s done properly by a professional. At Peak Pro Painting, when we spray homes, each spray line overlaps the last one by 50%. Therefore, when finished, the home actually has two coats on it. If you look at the back of a paint can, it will most likely say that each gallon covers 300-400 square feet. But in fact, we use a gallon of paint per approximately 200 square feet.

A final thought when comparing rolling to spraying: take a look at your vehicle and imagine if you were to repaint it. Would you use a roller or have it sprayed, to obtain the most flawless finish?

Maintaining Your Home After a Professional Painting Job

Having your home professionally painted is a big investment. It is considered one of the best home improvement projects you can do, as it protects your most valuable asset—your home. That being said, you want to extend the lifetime of this investment to benefit you and your home as long as possible. There are certain best practices to make this happen.

1. Properly Pressure Washing

Wait at least 2 weeks after having your home painted to pressure wash it, but make sure to do this from time to time in order to keep the surface of your home clean. Over time, sap, dust, and dirt are attracted to your siding, not only making it look grimy, but also appealing to mildew. Pressure washing restores your siding and keeps it mold free. You want to keep the pressure down so that you don’t damage your siding or your paint.

2. Protecting Against Mold and Mildew

If there is already mold or mildew on your home, you can add a mold detergent to most pressure washers. We use a product called BioKleen , which is very effective in mold removal while remaining environmentally safe.

3. Touch Up Weathered Spots as Needed

No matter how well the area has been prepped and painted, rapid deterioration is inevitable. Whenever you notice bare wood or other deterioration, make sure to touch it up. Don’t wait 8 years until your next paint job! At that point, you’ll be looking at wood replacement.

As long as you have chosen a quality painting contractor and good materials, and you maintain upkeep of the exterior of your home, you can extend the life of your paint job by years, and the life of your home by decades!
